ORLANDO (CityofOrlando.net) – When the Orlando City Soccer Club opens its 2016 campaign, the Lions will play in an intimate and fan-friendly Downtown Orlando stadium.
On Tuesday, City of Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs and Orlando City President Phil Rawlins unveiled renderings of the stadium, which will open prior to the 2016 Major League Soccer season.
The stadium, which will be located on Church Street, just one block from the Amway Center, will have room for 19,500 fans.
The venue will feature a full 360-degree lower bowl built below ground level with a unique three-stand seating upper bowl. Full roof canopies will cover seats to protect fans from the sun and rain and are also designed to amplify crowd noise.
“This is going to be a fabulous facility,” Mayor Dyer said. “We are going to be developing this with the key guiding principles that we used for all of the (Orlando) venues. We want a building that is state-of-the-art, but most importantly reflects our community and has an Orlando feel to it. We want buildings that are environmentally friendly and we want buildings that have amenities for every ticket level, every fan.”
The stadium will be constructed with underground infrastructure built-in to allow for future seating expansion in the stadium corners.
Orlando City will play its inaugural campaign in the MLS in 2015 in the Orlando Citrus Bowl, which is currently undergoing renovations.
