Blind Motorcycle Racer to Address Convention

Dan Parker, an experienced racecar builder and driver who lost his sight as the result of a racing accident in 2012, will address the convention on Sunday, July 6, at 9:05 a.m. On August 27, 2013, Dan Parker became the second blind man to publicly operate a vehicle independently, and the first blind man to race at the Bonneville Salt Flats.

Esteemed NFB President to Give Final Presidential Report

Dr. Marc Maurer, President of the National Federation of the Blind, will give his last presidential report to attendees of the convention on the afternoon of July 4, at 2:05 p.m. Maurer has held the presidency of the NFB since July of 1986, and has announced that he will not seek reelection at this year’s convention.

Reporter Arthur Schreiber to Share His Experiences Traveling with the Beatles

On Friday, July 4, at 4:10 p.m., Arthur Schreiber, reporter and chairman of the New Mexico Commission for the Blind, will share with the convention his unique experience as one of two reporters who traveled with the Beatles on their first cross-country tour through the United States.

Blind Youth to Participate in Unique Triathlon

Many different sporting events for blind people of all ages will be held at the national convention. Blind people are often told they cannot participate in athletic pursuits, and the National Federation of the Blind works to dispel that misconception and encourage blind people to live the lives they want with exciting activities throughout the convention.

On Wednesday, July 2, from 5:15 p.m. to 6:15 p.m., the National Organization of Parents of Blind Children (NOPBC) will hold its first-ever Breaking Barriers Triathlon. The blind youth who participate will swim through shark-infested waters, race in an alligator-infested swamp, and shoot down barriers to independence. The triathlon will be held in the pool area of the Rosen Centre.
