There is no denying that the arts are the “soul” of a city. Arts and culture create a community’s unique sense of place and nurture a unique bond between a city and its residents. In addition to their enormous cultural impact, the arts help create jobs for residents, and they are some of the most vital tools in attracting the talent and businesses a city needs to thrive.

Orlando is a young, vibrant city with many important stories to tell, and that’s why I’m announcing a search for a Poet Laureate. Orlando deserves an official storyteller to reflect the diverse and inclusive spirit of our community by promoting literary education in our schools by sharing poetry with the people of Orlando.
The purpose of the position is to promote poetry and an appreciation of poetry among the general public and to inspire an emerging generation of literary artists and readers of literature. The process of selecting Orlando’s first Poet Laureate will be conducted in partnership with United Arts of Central Florida and Orlando-based nonprofit Burrow Press, the largest independent publisher in Florida. Both organizations are committed to helping the City foster a robust literary community in Orlando and Central Florida.
Together, our community has worked hard to incorporate the arts in everything we do and increase arts and cultural opportunities for everyone, no matter their income or age. We’re excited to continue the journey of making Orlando a world-class arts community with a storyteller who will be able to share with the world what we already know – that Orlando is a city for art and for everyone.
