MIAMI – December 5, 2017: The United States has jumped up to the second most popular country for European travelers to visit in 2018, from ninth place last year, according to new data from the new ‘European Traveler Insights Report’, compiled by global online travel company eDreams ODIGEO.
eDreams ODIGEO, Europe’s largest online travel company whose brands include popular travel booking website edreams.net and the metasearch engine liligo.com, has released the report based on the company’s extensive flight passenger data to share insight into traveler trends.
Predictions for holiday hot spots in 2018
The U.S. is ranked the second most popular country to visit in 2018 by European travelers, up from ninth spot the year prior. Spain tops the list for European travelers, with Italy in third place and the United Kingdom in fourth spot. The French, Germans, Brits, Spanish and Italians make up the top five nations planning to visit the U.S. in 2018.
Four U.S. cities make the list of Top 25 Most Trending Travel Destinations for Europeans in 2018. San Francisco nabs the spot as the world’s second most popular place to visit next year for European travelers, based on bookings made so far in 2017 for 2018. Miami comes in at 13th place, followed by Los Angeles in 14th place and New York in 22nd place.
These four U.S. destinations have all shown strong growth from the same period the year before. San Francisco passenger numbers from Europe for 2018 are up 158%, Los Angeles up 93%, Miami up 99%, and New York up 76% in 2017, compared to the same period in 2016.
New low-cost flight options driving down the price of flights to and from the U.S.
It appears this jump in demand could be due to the price of flights between Europe and several U.S. cities dropping between 2016 and 2017. Prices between Europe and San Francisco are down by 19%, Los Angeles by 17%, Miami by 12% and New York by 11%. Since 2012, 15 long-haul, low-cost airlines have launched[1] around the world, providing stiff price competition to more established long-haul carriers, and driving prices down across the board.
Airlines across Europe are increasingly engaging in a transatlantic price war, with for example, Icelandic firm WOW Air offering flights to the States for less than $135 and low-cost carrier Norwegian selling flights from the UK and Ireland to America from as little as $93 one way or $186 return.
U.S. travelers choosing to fly to U.S. cities, as Las Vegas tops list as most popular destination for 2017
Looking at 2017 so far, Las Vegas tops the list as most popular city for Americans to visit for a second year in a row, based on flight passenger volume. Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, and Los Angeles come next in the list, with London – the only European city in the top 10 destinations – securing spot number five.
Meanwhile, 2018 booking patterns for American travelers so far reveal that the U.S. tops the list as the most popular country, followed by Mexico, The United Kingdom and France.
Dana Dunne, CEO of eDreams ODIGEO, said: “Our second annual European Traveler Insights Report offers unique and interesting insights into travelers’ booking habits, including a good indication of the destinations set to be big next year based on current bookings.”
“The choice and competitive pricing offered by low-cost airlines has really opened up the travel market in recent years. eDreams ODIGEO exists to help travelers compare their options and book the best and most convenient deals for them. The additional choices presented by new market entrants are welcome news to consumers and the travel industry.”
