They haven’t played the Orlando Citrus Bowl – or Orlando for that matter – in 18 years so it sure is a thrill to welcome The Rolling Stones back to our newly-reconstructed stadium. Time is certainly on our side. Yes, it is.
Mick, Keith, Ronnie and Charlie first played here in 1981 and most recently played here in 1997 as part of their Bridge to Babylon tour. Commonly regarded as the “World’s Greatest Rock ‘n’ Roll Band,” the Stones simply would not have returned to Orlando – their only stop in Florida – on their 15-city ZIP Code Tour unless there was a suitable venue to host them.
I’m proud to say our modernized stadium has become the draw we knew it had the potential to be. Promoters are reaching out to us like never before and many diverse shows are actively being discussed for the future. Among all the activity between Orlando City matches, bowl games and Monster Jam, we’ve already got some new exciting events on the horizon. For starters there’s a huge international soccer friendly between Mexico and Costa Rica at the end of this month, the inaugural AutoNation Cure Bowl (our third bowl game) kicks-off December 19 and we welcome the first “Kick-Off Classic” in 2016.
These events are fun to experience and when they take place in our state-of-the-art venues, it increasingly elevates our City’s status as a truly top-tier destination. The sizable economic impact on the local economy continues to drive our city forward.
I’ll be among the 50,000 screaming fans welcoming the British Invasion back to The City Beautiful tonight. So many great memories await.
