ORLANDO, Fla., April 27, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The Invictus Games are coming to Orlando, Florida, and Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) will be there to support the event and the competing wounded veterans. The Invictus Games are the only international adaptive sports competition for wounded, ill and injured active duty and retired servicemen and women. For years, WWP has funded organizations that share the WWP mission to honor and empower Wounded Warriors, and, this year, WWP is proud to be recognized as an official partner of the Invictus Games Orlando 2016. As part of this partnership, WWP will be providing bicycles that can be modified to meet the needs of the athletes participating in the cycling events as well as other technical support.
“At WWP, we understand the benefits that wounded veterans can experience when they live healthy and active lifestyles,” said Maj. Gen. Charlie Fletcher, interim chief operating officer at WWP. “The power of sports can inspire recovery. By partnering with the Invictus Games Orlando 2016, WWP will be able to help generate a wider understanding and respect for injured service members and the challenges they face after combat. We are proud to partner with this amazing event and are excited by the competitive platform it provides injured service members. The Games give wounded warriors a chance to come together and demonstrate their amazing athleticism and determination.”
From May 8-12, Orlando and ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex will host more than 500 competitors from 14 nations. Competitors will compete in archery, cycling, indoor rowing, power lifting, sitting volleyball, swimming, track and field, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby, and wheelchair tennis. “The competitors of the Invictus Games are men and women who have come face-to-face with the reality of making a sacrifice for their country, and suffered life-changing injuries as a result,” said Invictus Games Orlando 2016 Organizing Committee Chairman Ken Fisher. “We are glad that Wounded Warrior Project understands this important mission. The commitment WWP is making will directly improve the lives of Invictus competitors from around the world while maintaining respect for the solemn promise we all make to uphold the values of our service members. We thank Wounded Warrior Project for their support and look forward to welcoming the hundreds of competitors who will be competing in the Games.
WWP’s support of the Invictus Games is part of the nonprofit’s efforts to fund veteran service organizations and opportunities that provide innovative and effective programs and services addressing the most pressing needs of our nation’s wounded veterans, their caregivers, and families. Between 2012 and 2015, WWP devoted nearly $11 million to more than 90 organizations that share WWP’s vision of fostering the most successful, well-adjusted generation of wounded service members in our nation’s history.
