Orlando’s broad appeal has made us a bustling international tourist destination that attracts more than 62 million visitors each year. Yet this month, our Central Florida community will see an even larger influx of international visitors as they arrive here to experience the excitement of Copa America Centenario.

Soccer is the world’s sport and this is truly a milestone event for Orlando. This year is the 100th anniversary of the Latin American Championship and it marks the first time the tournament has been staged outside of South America.

Simply put: this is the biggest sporting event in Orlando since we successfully hosted 1994 World Cup matches.

Orlando is one of only ten cities throughout the U.S. selected to host Copa America (the closest other cities are Houston and Philadelphia) and that’s no small feat. In addition to our enviable climate, world-class hotels and countless attractions, our newly-reconstructed Camping World Stadium was a key factor. It was designed to enhance the fan experience and draw new high-profile events like Copa America.

Since reopening the stadium gates barely 18 months ago, this community continues to see a large return on our investment. In fact, our three Copa America matches are expected to generate an estimated $30 million local economic impact and 40,000 room nights.

So whether you’re a fan of one of the six national teams that will be playing here in the week ahead or a proud resident that wants to see what all the excitement is about, I encourage you to get in on the action as Orlando hosts history.

It’s a terrific opportunity to see some of the world’s best players while showcasing why we’re the No. 1 sports destination in the world.

Viva la Copa!

– Buddy Dyer, Mayor
