Following the darkest morning in our city’s history this summer, the Orlando community shined with love and compassion for our neighbors. We lined up for hours to give blood, offered our love and support at vigils and donated millions of dollars to help those in need.

Residents from all walks of life helped, cared for and loved one another when our community needed it most.

We have experienced the sadness of a horrific tragedy, but now, during Come Out With Pride week, we have the opportunity to come together and celebrate.

We are celebrating that our community is diverse and inclusive. We’ll continue to show the world that because Orlando is a welcoming city, we will not be defined by June 12, but instead be known worldwide as a place that celebrates our differences.

LGBTQ+ community accomplishments

Saturday’s Come Out With Pride parade and festival will attract more than 150,000 LGBTQ community members and allies around Lake Eola Park in Downtown Orlando. I’ll be participating in the parade alongside City Commissioners, members of the Orlando Police Department and Orlando Fire Department and City of Orlando staff.

Come Out With Pride is also a huge economic driver – visitors from across the nation will visit our city, spending money in our hotels, restaurants and shops.

Since June 12, our community has experienced so many emotions. This week we can take pride in the fact that our community is so accepting. We can celebrate that Orlando is a place where people can be themselves.

I hope to see you in Downtown Orlando on Saturday as we celebrate that our community remains Orlando United.
