Local Martin Luther King, Jr. Events Honor the Life and Legacy of Late Civil Rights Leader
WHAT:
Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and the Mayor’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission are proud to announce a variety of events to commemorate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. throughout the month of January.
The Commission is a volunteer organization including business and community representatives appointed by Mayor Dyer to raise funds and coordinate events that promote the celebration of Dr. King’s legacy of equality, justice, freedom, peace and harmony for all races and cultures in Greater Orlando. Below is a list of this year’s events.
Asterisks (***) denote the events that Mayor Dyer will play a role in this year, and interview and visual opportunities will be available.

Candlelight Vigil and March***
6:00 p.m.
Beginning at Orlando City Hall, 400 Orange Avenue
Presented by Mayor’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission. This event is free and following the vigil participants will march to Shiloh Baptist Church.
Interfaith Multicultural Celebration***
6:30 p.m.
Shiloh Baptist Church, 604 West Jackson Street
Presented by the Interfaith Council of Central Florida. This event is free and will feature speakers from various faiths reflecting on Dr. King’s life and legacy.

13th Annual MLK Leadership Forum
6:30 p.m.
Florida A&M University College of Law, 201 Beggs Avenue
Presented by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity & Florida A&M University College of Law Black Law Student Association. The forum is a panel discussion focusing on issues of significance to the community and concepts addressed by Dr. King. This event is free.

32nd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Luncheon***
11:30 a.m.
First Baptist Church of Orlando – Faith Hall, 3000 South John Young Parkway
The theme of the event is “Fulfilling the American Dream” and the speaker is Karen Hunter, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, professor and publisher. There is a cost for this event.
2018 City of Hope
7:00 p.m.
Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Institutional Church, 535 West Washington Street
Presented by the “Negro Spiritual” Scholarship Foundation. The concert performance features music, visual imagery, oration and poetry. This event is free.

34th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade***
10:00 a.m. (parade starts)
Southwest Orlando Jaycee, Orange Avenue
The theme for this event is King: His Voice, His Teachings, His Love for Humanity. This is a community parade to honor the legacy and life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and bring the message of unity to all people.

27th Annual Arthur “Pappy” Kennedy Prayer Breakfast***

First Baptist Church of Orlando – Faith Hall, 3000 South John Young Parkway
Presented by the YMCA of Central Florida and The Southwest Orlando Jaycees. There is a cost for this event.
City of Orlando’s Great Day of Service Projects
9:00 a.m.
Trotters Park, 2701 Lee Road
Presented by City of Orlando District Commissioners, the Mayor’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission, Green-Up Orlando, Keep Orlando Beautiful & Green Works Orlando. Together, volunteers will work on projects to benefit City of Orlando residents. This event is free.
Attendees will plant seedlings for Civil Rights and Cleanup/Great Day of Service.

Youth Humanitarian award winners will be recognized during half time at the Orlando Magic game. The award winners are Orange County middle and high students selected by school officials for exemplifying the ideals embraced by Dr. King, Jr.
